DARKROOM DETROIT OPENS WITH ‘PREFACE’ GROUP PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
Darkroom Detroit is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to increasing photography access and education in Detroit using both traditional and digital processes. They promote visual storytelling rooted in the local community, while bringing global perspective and photography talent to Detroit. Their new space in Islandview hosts classes and workshops for all ages and levels, including free and reduced tuition classes, gallery and co-working space, and print and material sales. This week they launched a Patroncity crowdfunding campaign to continue to develop the resources they need for their space. (More details below- donate today!)
Don’t miss the celebration of their debut exhibition and grand opening at 676 E Grand Blvd, Detroit! Preface will run September 30 – November 18, 2017, with an opening celebration on September 30 from 6-9pm. A panel discussion with the artists will be held prior to the opening on September 29th at 6:30pm at Grand On River, 5001 Grand River Ave, Detroit.
Preface features artists Kris Graves, Darryl DeAngelo Terrell, Amy Elkins, Kia LaBeija and Jacob Krupnick. Using photography and video, their work is a celebration of the complexity of the self; exploring how individuals self-identify in tension with how they are viewed by others and offering a discussion of vulnerability through representation. Addressing issues as race and gender, these artists ask viewers to examine their own prejudicial bias or stereotypes, while providing reference points for the extremities of these complex systems, such as mass-incarceration.
The exhibition is sponsored by edWeb.net, a free professional learning network that encourages educators to connect and collaborate to improve teaching and learning. Co-sponsors include Our/Detroit Vodka, Hostel Detroit and Grand On River.

Darkroom Detroit is an open creative space that will inspire and nurture your love for photography, whether you’ve never taken a picture, or you’re a working professional. Everyone is welcome here. We will offer photo classes for all ages and levels, darkroom and digital labs, a gallery, co-working space, and a supportive environment to help you take better pictures, print your images, or browse our collection of photos.
Detroiters need to share their own stories. We support photography being created locally and encourage Detroiters to reclaim the narrative about their city through both analog and digital images.
There is a lack of access to the arts in Detroit neighborhoods. Darkroom Detroit will be an intersection point between the artistic community and the local community; breaking down barriers through creative collaboration. We are professional space that is an open resource for everyone in the community.
Creativity must be affordable for everyone. We will provide free community and after school classes to make photography accessible. Photographers and students alike can sell their work in our print store, providing the opportunity to make money from their creative pursuits and cultivate a career path in the creative industries
