If their Boiler Room set is any indication, KOKOKO! is about to set Deluxx Fluxx on fire this evening. The group has been called “an explosive cocktail of influences” that “thrives on ingenuity” by TIME and Resident Advisor respectively, and their roots in Kinsasha, DR Congo have never been far from their hearts, even as they travel around the world in support of their debut LP, Fongola. Check out the lead single and video, “Buka Dansa” here!
Discussing ‘Buka Dansa’, the group offered the following; “’Buka Dansa’ means ‘dance till it breaks’, or ‘break the dance’ and Dido sings the song on a synthetic rhythm, where the riff from a self-made guitar moves with the melodies. The lyrics are psychedelic, and remember what’s good in life – putting that feeling parallel with a nice taste passing into your throat, like smoke, a digestion of good moments.”
Recently signed to Transgressive and Royal Mountain, KOKOKO! released their debut album Fongola on July 5th. The band represents the antithesis of tradition by building their own instruments and fusing electronic, psychedelic and afro-beat genres, and their debut album Fongola is the perfect example of this.
Fongola has received praise from The Guardian, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Paste Magazine, and more, and was named one of NPR’s ‘Top 10 Albums of July.’ With a buzz in the music world that is growing by the day, and a few undeniable pieces of documentation to assuage any skeptics, KOKOKO!’s show tonight at Deluxx Fluxx is a must-see opportunity for fans to experience this undeniably unique and infectiously energetic group as they bring their self-made sound to the rest of the world.
