AFROTOPIA PRESENTS SIGI FEST 2015 EXPLORING THE ENERGY OF THE COSMOS IN DETROIT

July is the festival season in Detroit and is in full swing! Another one to add to your calendars: Sigi Fest 2015, where you will be encouraged to: “transcend into the cosmos with AFROTOPIA.” Taking place in Southwest Detroit at the new art space House Opera l Opera House, Sigi Fest is a time to heal and celebrate using spirit science, art, music and performance.

“AFROTOPIA, the brainchild of Detroit curator and artist, Ingrid LaFleur of Maison LaFleur, uses the theories and aesthetic of the arts movement Afrofuturism as a vehicle for transformative education in Detroit and beyond. Afrofuturism is an international multi-disciplinary cultural aesthetic that discusses the Black experience, identity, and history using speculative modalities such as magical realism, fantasy, science fiction and surrealism. Afrofuturists incorporate ancient history, African mythology, technology, biology, genetics, African cosmologies, and other themes within their work.”

AFROTOPIA is a multifaceted project that includes:

  • Arts education for youth and adults
  • Film series

“The ultimate goal of AFROTOPIA is to shift the perspective of Detroit into one that imagines the indefinite possibilities for prosperous growth stimulated by the cultural legacy of Black American radical thought and experimentation.

“For two days we will be celebrating the helical rise of the star Sigi Tolo aka Sirius. It is believed during this time the vortex from the Source opens up and floods our universe with her light. We intend to harness this energy for Detroit. The Dogon of Mali in West Africa have a 700 year old cosmology based on the star system Sirius, or Sigi Tolo in Dogon. Sirius, consists of Sirius A, Sirius B and Sirius C. Every fifty years the white dwarf star Sirius B rotates around its companion star Sirius A. The pattern looks like a DNA strand. Sirius A is thought of as being the brightest star in the night sky, the deep beginning and the center of our universe. The helical rise of the star Sirius is seen briefly above the eastern horizon just before sunrise.”
