CONCEPT56 TEAMS UP WITH DETROIT MURALIST ELLEN RUTT & COLLABORATORS FOR NEW MURAL IN CORKTOWN FOR UPCOMING PLEXUS EXPERIENCE
If you happen to look up, down, left or right, somewhere in Detroit right now, you are sure to find a vibrant, colorful mural. If you find yourself in Eastern Market, the Z Lot, riding along the Dequindre Cut or even exploring unexpected, hidden gems upon which street artists find their ‘canvases,’ you already know that public art and murals are an important part of Detroit’s past, present and future. During the past week, along a busy avenue in Corktown, one lucky wall has received a fresh coat of paint with some seriously cool art + design commissioned by Concept56 Detroit. But this mural contains some very important information. Murals in the Market alumna Ellen Rutt and an incredible team of collaborators have teamed up with this project and she is giving away an all access experience to PLEXUS.
But let’s start with a simple question, what is Concept56? Concept56 is like the sexy, alluring but coy crush that you always see around town, yet somehow know anything about. As you desperately search Instagram and Facebook for details, you might still come up short and find yourself wondering if you’re a net lurking loser or they are really just THAT mysterious. And yes, Concept56 is actually THAT mysterious- but- PLAYGROUND DETROIT has exclusive details on the organization, the mission and the upcoming PLEXUS event that everyone is talking about.
Earlier this year, Conpcept56, an initiative from Jägermeister USA announced their plans to hire five local creatives to plan the experience of a lifetime in Detroit. Out of over 200 applications, five were chosen including Anna Posey, Tim Schumack, Cy Tulip and Corey Cunningham. Headquartered in Detroit’s West Village, the diverse group has kept their noses to the grindstone to bring Detroit the event of a lifetime. “Our upcoming experience will be one to remember,” says Concept56 Detroit Marketing Lead, Tim Schumack. “It includes a lot of surprises, but we’re most excited about the multi-sensory aspect of it.” Head of Promotions, Corey Cunningham explains, “We want people to be blown away once they walk through the door.” As a part of Concept56’ promotional campaign, the group is bringing free PLEXUS tickets to the masses with an anticipated turnout of 1,000 people.
Nearing the six month mark of the project, Concept56 has recently produced a promotional mural created by local Detroit artists. The mural can be found at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Rosa Parks Blvd. The Concept56 mural comes as a collaborative effort between artists Ellen Rutt, fellow Murals in the Market muralist Ouizi, Designer Eileen Tjan of Other Studio, and Anna Posey.
“It leads to a website where anyone who visits (over the age of 21) can receive tickets to PLEXUS. The site requires a passphrase which can be obtained from the social media pages of a number of people who will be performing and helping build the PLEXUS experience including: Ellen Rutt, Sheefy McFly and Duane the Brand New Dog. You can also visit the social media channel from their other partners, Baltimore Gallery and Inner State Gallery for more than just tickets; Jägermeister’s Concept 56 Detroit is giving one lucky person an All Access Experience to PLEXUS in collaboration with the aforementioned partners.”
To win an an all access experience on July 16th, just snap a photo in front of the mural! Then share it on Instagram using the hashtag: #PLEXUS + #Concept56_Detroit and you will be entered for a chance at the All Access pass. You can head over to www.concept56.net/_detroit and use our code “PAINTTHETOWN” to redeem your tickets while they last- no photos needed!
The Concept56 Corktown mural and upcoming PLEXUS event are testaments to the array of contemporary artist perspectives in Detroit. Through collaboration with a cross-section of the city’s artistic talent, Jägermeister’s Concept56 Detroit plans to present an event for the ages. As murals have historically remained a relevant medium to convey information, the Corktown mural carries on the long-standing tradition by keeping the sacred details to the banger event of summer 2016.
