PD PRESENTS: CRISTIN RICHARD INSTALLATION AT MICHIGAN F.A.S.H. FEST
PLAYGROUND DETROIT Presents: Cristin Richard and her installation entitled, The American Dream at Michigan F.A.S.H. Fest. The installation takes place on September 15th, 2012 at Shain Park, Birmingham, MI [10am-5pm]. General admission is free to the public! Don’t miss the chance to see her work up close.
Born in 1981, Cristin Richard is part of the movement of artists whose work is related to the body and identity. Her work examines the human condition, and the fact that the body is physically and mentally determined in this condition. It is thus the window of our relation to the world. She transcribes her own personal story through impulses to existential questions. Particularly interested in the manipulation of organic matter, these materials build a dialog of what it feels like to be human. The human being is like nature, it transforms and regenerates in poetic and unpredictable ways. In the majority of her work, she reconstructs hog intestines into tangible objects. Playing on the ambiguity, created by the presence of this animal material, she develops metaphors loaded with complexities. Her work oscillates between fragility and violence, between beauty and repulsion, between opacity and transparency and also between strength and lightness. It explores our relationship to the body, relative to the most intimate fragments of the mind.
September 2012- Cristin Richard presents three artworks in three different locations. PLAYGROUND DETROIT has selected her to showcase The American Dream installation at F.A.S.H. Fest, an extension of this work is on exhibit in the windows of Linda Dresner boutique, and her work is also showcased at Sweet Spot, a selected group exhibition at the Robert Kidd Gallery.
Playing with the idea of fashion as sculpture, Cristin Richard blurs the line between fine art and fashion. At F.A.S.H. Fest and Linda Dresner, Cristin Richard will present two identical artworks, executed in two different ways. With the continuation of a recent work titled, The American Dream, 2011, The installations consist of a large Tee Pee like structure, also resembling a large dress. For F.A.S.H. Fest, Cristin will house a team of performers inside the dress. This reflects the desire to overcome the natural envelope of the body, but also carries the anxiety of confinement. Conceptually, this confinement relates to experiences that have shaped our childhood and hold us chained to some fears, an imperceptible depth of the being.
For Sweet Spot at Robert Kidd Gallery, Cristin Richard will show a work in the form of sound sculpture. With this particular work she recreates memory, capturing a beautiful moment leftover from a violent time.
