BUILDING MATERIALS: Lindsay Splichal X Detroit Month of Design Opens September 17th

PLAYGROUND DETROIT presents BUILDING MATERIALS, a site-specific exhibition by Lindsay Splichal that explores printmaking, sculpture, and installation. Lindsay Splichal builds space-responsive print monotypes that reflect on the familiarity of the domestic in her family’s construction heritage.

In BUILDING MATERIALS, she will create space-responsive print monotypes explored through the lenses of sculptural and print installation, alongside scalable, low-cost, high-labor take-aways. The exhibition requires and reflects on space, and in response, the space extends the work.

The work employs the use of construction materials such as foam, paint, cement, asphalt felt, OSB, drywall, and acrylic as well as Xerox transfers on paper, banner prints, and relief prints. It also exposes an interplay between architecture, space, and the vehicles of sculpture and print which engages the conversation of the overlap between the two-dimensional multiple and the three-dimensional object.

Selected as a 20/20 Emerging Artists Fellow, she will present non-traditional orientations of building materials through the vehicles of printmaking, sculpture, and installation as reflections of the chosen exhibition space’s unique architecture. By creating hand-labored monotype take-aways, it will provide accessibility to fine art printmaking labor and process by providing an entry point through observing abstractions of the familiar domestic.

BUILDING MATERIALS is presented in partnership with Detroit Month of Design 2020. Opening Reception is September 17th, 7-10PM at 8711 Grand River Blvd., Detroit, MI. RSVP required.
