Few people have been as integral to the birth of house music as François K.
Born in Rodez, France in January of 1954, he moved to New York City at a young age to continue to pursue his music career as a drummer. A dedicated audiophile and studied listener, he gravitated towards all types of music, and in 1972 he began DJ’ing after he played drums in a club where Walter Gibbons had been spinning.
The rest is history, and after a decades long career in music, including as an A&R for Prelude Records and an internationally renowned DJ, François is blessing the ears of Detroit’s with a special appearance at Tangent Gallery on Saturday, November 13th, joined bay local favorite Ladymonix and New York-based Rissa Garcia.
Detroit is of course the city of techno, but house music has always been a part of the fabric of dance music here. Many of Detroit’s most renowned producers and DJ’s, from Omar S to Theo Parrish and many more, owe as much to the foundations of house music as they do to the industrial sounds that were birthed within the city that they call home.
By following the lineage of house music, from the roots of disco and funk to the streets of Chicago and beyond, listeners can begin to develop a deeper appreciation for the sounds that make us move.
It’s easy to forget how lucky we are in Detroit, to have world-class musicians at our doorstep playing at our favorite clubs every week. But occasionally with an appearance from someone like François, we can be reminded of the significance of Detroit and its place in the history of dance music and culture that makes the world move.
