The Detroit Red Bull House of Art celebrated its third gallery opening in December 2012 which featured a new set of talented Detroit residents. Many of our favorite artist were featured this time around- Dan Armand, also part-owner of 323East Gallery, Craig Paul Nowak, and Vaughn Taormina, AKA Count V Macula. If you didn’t get to catch the show it’s too late, they are already on to the next group of lucky artists.
For the next three months, Greg Siemasz, Kristin Adamczyk, William Harris, Ellen Rutt, Tylon Sawyer, Lisa Poszywak, Lindy Shewbridge & Kevin Skinner will be creating at the Red Bull House of Art. PLAYGROUND DETROIT got a private tour of the space from one of the residents we weren’t familiar with yet- Antoine Sleep McDowell, who spoke to Paulina Petkoski about his work and the show.
What is your medium used?
All stencil, spray-paint, and recycled materials. The Marilyns are all done on ply-wood, recycled ply-wood. I went right to Eastern Market and grabbed a pallet.
Is Detroit an inspiration for you?
It’s my city, I grew up born and raised here, spent 12 years in Florida and came back to start my art career all over here. I’ve been busy busy busy since I got back here.
Do you have a favorite piece in the show?
My favorite?… I don’t know. Once I get done with one, I’m on to the next one. All of my work is unique; I don’t keep my stencils, I toss them away when I’m done with series. Even if I wanted to I couldn’t replicate any of my work. Even though I have had a lot of requests to do that- I’m just not into that, that’s part of what makes it special. I guess, it’d have to be The Eyes on the bricks. There were originally 45 in all, this is what is left of them. They were all found in the Packard Plant and each one is different.
