October means that CMJ is here again! CMJ Music Marathon is one of the world’s most important platforms for the discovery of new music. For five nonstop days and nights, CMJ features over 1,400 live performances in more than 80 of New York City’s greatest nightclubs and theaters.
CMJ also presents over 100 informative conference events with renowned speakers, an Entertainment Business Law Seminar and College Day, programmed especially for college and non-commercial radio programmers.
PLAYGROUND DETROIT has scoured through this year’s line-up and found a nice selection of Detroit musicians and bands featured this year for you to check out!
Jamaican Queens
CAMEO GALLERY, SAT, OCTOBER 25, 6:00 PM > 6:45 PM
Matthew Dear
VERBOTEN, SAT, OCTOBER 25, 11:00 PM
Protomartyr
KNITTING FACTORY, Thu, October 23, 12:40 AM > 1:25 AM
Flavorpill has singled out Protomartyr as one of it’s “15 of the Choicest Picks from CMJ Music Marathon:”
‘Dark, brooding, and angular” are three words that get used a lot (maybe too much) to describe much of what’s been happening in punk over the last several years, but Detroit’s Protomartyr managed to break away from the pack as one of the best bands to be constantly compared to Joy Division in the recent past.”
Napoleon
Left Field (Downstairs), Wed, October 22, 9:00 PM > 9:45 PM & Bowery Electric, Thu, October 23, 1:40 PM > 2:10 PM
The dark pop quartet makes the most of their sonic resources to create a full, heavy dreamscape cut with glittering synth and careening guitar. The band (a pet project of frontman Julian Anderson-a Detroiter now based in Brooklyn) has been recognized as a force to keep an eye on both by local and international tastemakers.
