Crain’s Detroit // Lululemon to open concept store Sept. 22 in downtown Detroit

Lululemon Athletica is opening in downtown Detroit on Sept. 22 with a grand opening set to include DJ-spun tunes, ice cream, a run and plenty of yoga attire.

The Vancouver-based athletic apparel retailer announced last month it would open a store at 1459 Woodward Ave., taking over the former site of Kit + Ace, which closed in April.

Lululemon’s 3,000-square-foot downtown location is a concept store dubbed the Downtown Detroit Local that is aimed at engaging “intimately with Detroit residents by offering a place for connection, creation, sweat and collaboration,” according to a company news release.

The store is collaborating with creative agency and gallery Playground Detroit to decorate its interior with a print by Ellen Rutt, custom illustrations by Haley S. Stone and a mural by [Detroit-based] Brazilian artist Arlin Graff.

Hours will be 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.

On Sept. 24, the store will host a free yoga session and mindfulness event.

The company is providing monetary support through a partnership with the nonprofit Downtown Boxing Gym. It is donating $20,000 to the gym this fall, store spokeswoman Meghan Chisholm said. It is also donating 50 percent of the downtown store’s profits to the gym through the first two years after opening, for a total up to $200,000.
