Curbed // ‘Detroit’ movie mural revealed, premiere date set

As Detroit readies for the 50th anniversary of the events from July ‘67 (a riot or rebellion, depending on who you ask), a Hollywood film could take center stage later this month. Detroit, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, details the events at the Algiers Motel, where three young men were murdered and nine others were badly beaten. The movie was only partially filmed here; most was filmed in Massachusetts.

The Detroit Free Press reports that the premiere will take place July 25 at the Fox Theatre and that much of the cast and crew will be in attendance for the world premiere. More details, including how to go, should be announced soon.

A new mural for the movie is now up in Eastern Market at I-75 and Russell. Background on the image can be found here. The mural was completed by Detroit artist Nic Notion curated by PLAYGROUND DETROIT in partnership with Brooklyn Outdoor and Annapurna Pictures.

More information on artist collaboration in the city will be released in the coming weeks, leading up to the premiere. In the mean time, two trailers have been released for the film. It stars John Boyega, Will Poulter, Algee Smith, John Krasinski, and Anthony Mackie and opens August 4 across the country.
