Depth of Field: Group Exhibition ft. 20/20 Emerging Artists Fellow Sheila Nicolin + Jackson E. Joyce, Michael Polakowski opens July 11th
PLAYGROUND DETROIT presents Depth of Field, a group exhibition that explores the interaction between physical and mental space, opening to the public on Friday, June 11th from 7-10pm with RSVP.
Featuring new works by Sheila Nicolin, Jackson E. Joyce and Michael Polakowski, this show challenges the nature of reality versus full-color experiences through a surrealist lens. Via brightly-colored and unsettlingly off-kilter images of the everyday, all three painters create emotive works that question the division between presence and dissociation; distraction and connection; day-dreaming and memory.
Sheila Nicolin is a Detroit-based painter with an emphasis on portraiture and pattern, whose work explores the very human struggle to find intimate connection. She is a PLAYGROUND DETROIT 20/20 Emerging Artists Fellow 2020, and in 2021 had a her debut solo exhibition at UUU Art Collective in Rochester, NY and an artist residency at Google. She is a graduate from College for Creative Studies (2018). Her work has been showcased by booooooom, Supersonic Art and The Metropolitan, and worked with clients including The Platform, Broder & Sachse, and Walmart.
Jackson E. Joyce is an illustrator and painter based in Brooklyn, New York, and a 2018 graduate from RISD. Jackson’s work has been showcased by booooooom, Ballpit Mag, Juxtapoz and It’s Nice That. He has illustrated for clients including NBC News and the Washington Post, and just concluded a group show at Galleria D’arte in Imola, Italy. He is currently showcasing work with Uprise NYC.
Michael Polakowski is a Detroit-based painter and 2017 graduate of CCS, whose practice rests on the intersection between gallery painting and large-scale murals. He has worked with commercial clients like Quicken Loans, Hour Magazine and Narratively Illustrated, and he has participated in Murals in the Market and the Bright Walls Mural Festival. Most recently, he has participated in the Fall 2019 Red Bull Artist Residency.
The exhibition will be on view by appointment with viewing hours at 2845 Gratiot Avenue though July 17th.
