DETROIT DESIGN FESTIVAL 2015 INTERNATIONALLY SHOWCASES TOP DESIGN TALENT

The fifth-annual Detroit Design Festival, presented by the Detroit Creative Corridor Center kicks off the annual celebration of creativity and design taking place on Sept. 22 to 26, 2015. The citywide event brings together designers and enthusiasts alike to celebrate Detroit’s role as a design capital showcasing widespread local talent.

“We’re committed to becoming the go-to festival for independent designers in North America,” said Ellie Schneider, Associate Director at DC3. “The Detroit Design Festival showcases the creativity, design and innovation our region has to offer. We’re committed to ensuring that the spotlight stays on our strong creative industry here in Detroit by providing a stage for designers to display their hard work.”

After a successful first year, the festival will once again feature the Design Village, a pop-up marketplace of independent designers. Additionally, the festival will also feature public design installations in partnership with the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy. The dozens of installations, shows, previews, performances and workshops will take place at venues along Detroit’s Creative Corridor, between Eastern Market and Dequindre Cut.

#PLAY on Detroit’s Dequindre Cut presented by the winners of the DDF Public Design Installation Competition featuring interactive installations from:

Swing Dequindre by Laavu Studio

The Dequindre cut is one of our favorite green spaces in Detroit. Although functioning as a thoroughfare, imagine if the Dequindre cut was somewhere people did not just pass through, but actually paused for a moment- and enjoyed the song birds and the natural landscape that exists, so close to the city but isolated because it is below street level- creating a unique experience for city dwellers and visitors. A swing is a simple way to engage many different types of people- anyone can get on a swing! The L’Arramee swing was inspired by the solitude, the natural environment, and our longing to sit and enjoy one of most beautiful green-spaces in Detroit, the Dequindre Cut. The sail captures wind, and creates a peaceful ‘whoosh’ sound, when activated.

Lazermaze by George King Architects: London

The Lazermaze is an architectural installation formed from three miles of wool dyed with UV ink. The playful structure invites visitors to get lost within a unique surreal space as they journey towards the centre. The complex geometry of the form combined with the ethereal, semi-transparent nature of the walls adds to the challenge of this spatial puzzle.
