From the automotive industry to the birth of Techno, Detroit has long been a center for innovation and culture. Although New York and Los Angeles are usually thought of first, Detroit is the only UNESCO-designated design city within the U.S. and a hotspot for burgeoning changemakers.
Presented by Design Core, the ongoing Detroit Month of Design looks to continue to city’s pedigree in cultivating top-tier talent spanning a range of creative industries. Running in its 12th edition, this year’s theme is dubbed “United By Design,” to which festival organizers believe “this element holds the key to creating a future in which all people, and our planet, can thrive.”
Highlights of the citywide event include the Gucci Changemakers Scholars exhibition, entitled “Building a Lasting Impact” (September 9 to 11), which will present the portfolios of young creatives and social change visionaries who are using their unique perspectives to catalyze lasting social change within the global community. Housed at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), the three-day event is curated by Kiana Wenzell and doubles-down on Gucci’s commitment to investing over $2m USD to organizations working to provide social good in diverse communities in North America.
Additional exhibitions include CCS’ exhibition dedicated to broadening careers in mobility and transportation, Cranbrook Academy of Art’s Chair Show, Julian J. Jones’ solo show inspired by African American quilting, a Sneaker House showcase by Foot Locker and much more.
There are over 100 events in total, from open studios and large-scale exhibitions, to outdoor markets, experiential events and online offerings. Detroit Month of Design is on view now across the city and will conclude on Friday, September 30. Please visit the organization’s website for the full list of programming.
