DONATE NOW: THE HEIDELBERG PROJECT NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT TO FIGHT AGAINST STRING OF ARSON ATTACKS

World-famous Heidelberg Project needs your help.  Over the past six months, multiple arson fires have attacked the 27-year old public art initiative from Detroit artist and activist, Tyree Guyton. The buildings that remain now of the three-block neighborhood are the “Party Animal House,” covered with stuffed animals; the “People’s House,” a home covered with polka dots, and the “Number House,” which houses Heidelberg’s welcome center and gift shop.

After investigators declared the fires arson, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced it is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those involved. Anyone with information is asked to call 888-283-3473 (888-ATF-FIRE) or the Detroit Fire Department’s arson unit at 313-596-2940. Local artist, choreographer, and dancer Ryan Myers-Johnson calls for action,

We really need to get together as artists and support The Heidelberg Project. This terrible attack on the city’s artistic heritage continues. They want to auction off the DIA and burn Heidelberg. Let’s seek peace and support this important project that’s been helping the city for nearly 30 years.”

This year the #NYC2DET Creative Caravan took a small curated group of New Yorkers to visit Detroit, and The Heidelberg Project was one of the best stops on the weekend trip. See photos below of our group of visitors enjoying the public art houses, installations, and neighborhood. We are deeply saddened by the string of senseless arson attacks on this project almost three decades in the making. We are encouraging your support to go towards establishing justice for art that has been serving a community for a very long time.
