It’s Christmas in July as Detroit quartet, Double Winter bear the gift of their debut EP Album Release, Watching Eye at Corktown’s UFO Factory this week with an out of this world supporting line-up! UFO is guaranteed to transport attendees into uncharted rock and dance destinations as special guests VNESSWOLFCHILD, The Bed Band and DJ LADY FANTASTIC accompany the bands live performance.
Double Winter is comprised of Augusta Morrison, Morgan McPeak, Holly Johnson, and Vittorio Vettraino, who came together in 2014. The band formed that summer in McPeak’s basement [with original members Augusta, Holly, Lindsay and Morgan.] Morrison recalls, “We played music everyday that summer and we were finally ready to play gigs beginning in the winter of 2014. We needed to come up with a name, so our friend thought of Double Winter. We liked it- and it was a really harsh winter- so the cold feeling that the name brought to our bones just worked. Later that year, Lindsay moved to New York. [And] Vittorio was brought on as the lead guitarist. Double Winter is an homage to a time and place…It’s so cold in the D.”
After releasing the well-received self-titled debut track off the album earlier this year, Double Winter has kept anticipation high with a string of recent performances at Kelly’s Bar, Lo & Behold! Records & Books, The Blind Pig and most recently at Jam Handy in late May. With all of the performances Double Winter has been playing as of late, they have received the Internet’s attention, escalating in a highly anticipated live performance for the album release on July 7th.
New York-based music and culture blog Audiofemme reviewed their debut track, “The track sounds pleasantly unfinished, the production slightly tinny, the vocals wistful and monotone ‘XO, Skeleton’ doesn’t overthink and in doing so delivers a sweetly melancholic, hair-twirling, window-watching serenade.”
“XO, Skeleton” has a raw sound, initiating with catchy, drifting vocals and a melodic surf rock feel. With about a minute left, Double Winter takes the track double time, illustrating the duality of the song and overall versatility of the quirky quad. If XO, Skeleton is a preview of what’s to come on the Watching Eye album, nothing short of a dynamic listening experience is to be expected.
Watching Eye EP is coming to the masses courtesy of independent record label, Palm Tapes. Based in Detroit, a local musician/artist Max Fabick, who launched Palm Tapes in Fall of 2015. Daily Detroit profiled the label launch last October explaining that, “Max sought an outlet through which he could explore more experimental, improvisational music. After several years of Palm Tapes sitting on the back burner, he decided to resurrect the label idea as a vehicle for a releasing a wider range of music…” wrote writer Joel Gullickson.
Max’s unbridled approach corresponds with the originality of the music exported from Palm Tapes. Innovative and emergent artists such as Clyde Moop, Stef & Anna and Gaye Israel have made releases through the label, giving it an unduplicable spread of audio offerings.
You will feel the family love as fellow Palm Tapes’ artist Ivan Antonio, AKA The Bed Band will perform, in addition to Detroit’s finest women-led solo acts, VNESSWOLFCHILD, (also a Palm Tapes artist) known for her powerful and inspiring performance art. DJ Lady Fantastic will blast everyone into another galaxy with her pure dance power and good vibes.
If you can’t make the show you can still purchase digital downloads of Watching Eye online from Palm Tapes or on their Bandcamp. Spoiler alert: the release will be available on tape as well! Bring your ‘watching eyes’ to UFO Factory on July 7th and witness an EP release show that you don’t want to miss.
