GIVE BACK THIS HOLIDAY SEASON BY DONATING ART SUPPLIES TO DETROIT COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL

It’s that time of year! We are celebrating the holiday season with an annual art supplies fundraiser and party!

In the spirit of the giving season, PLAYGROUND DETROIT in cooperation with Detroit By Design is collecting art supplies for Detroit high school students. We are so excited for the opportunity to give back to the youth community. Event entry will require bringing donated art supplies as well as invite attendees to participate in a silent art auction for any holiday shopping needs.

Donated art supplies will be given to Detroit Community High School, located in the Brightmoor Neighborhood of Detroit. Brightmoor’s crime and poverty rate has become one of the highest in the metro area. The school is located in an old factory and is also a winner of a Knight Arts Grant, which will go toward a new building to use as “an incubator for creative enterprises and a community space for developing skills.” The benefits of arts education include increased interest in school, improved test scores, better problem solving skills, and a sense of pride and accomplishment. This experiential process of making art is crucial to success in school and in life.

Paula Schubatis is the current Arist-In-Residence at Detroit Community High School, who has been developing public projects with the classes at the school that integrate her colorful and quirky aesthetic. Her artwork will be a featured installation on display at the holiday party and available in the silent auction, winners will be announced at 10pm.

The music line-up for the evening includes some of Detroit’s hottest emerging electronic artists. Internationally renowned DJ MGUN will play a duo set with fellow collaborator, DJ Con Man AKA Conor Medenhall, a sought-after DJ in his own right, together under the alias, GunMen. “Another DJ on the line-up, Jay Daniel is a young Detroit DJ on the rise, and undoubtedly a name that will be heard often in the next couple years,” according to Resident Advisor. Thornstryker recently ‘started her reign as the NBA’s first woman DJ during a preseason game’ this year. Erno the Inferno works with Paxahau, and also produces and plays in a band; his ‘DJ sets are like disco and classic house having a love affair with techno.’

There will be a surprise musical guest to serenade the party with holidays tunes!

In the spirit of the season, our only request is that you PLEASE BRING ART SUPPLIES TO DONATE at the door. See below for the school’s suggestions (used or new) Art Supplies!
