Painter Sun Wang will present his first solo exhibition on Feb. 19 with the opening of Quiet Moonlight at Playground Detroit. The show will feature the Pontiac-based artist’s kaleidoscopic paintings, which explore the relationship between Eastern and Western cultures.

On display through March 27, Quiet Moonlight is comprised of colorful storyboards and vignettes. According to a press release, the works highlight social-economic and cultural struggles as well as themes such as religion, mythology, war, and the rise and fall of regimes.

Wang, a native of China’s Sichuan providence, moved to the U.S. in 2012. He received his Master of Fine Arts in painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills in 2019.

Last year, Wang was selected as a recipient of Playground Detroit’s 20/20 Emerging Artist Fellowship. The two-year juried program, which launched in 2020, awarded 10 local artists with $2,000 each to develop their practices. An online group exhibition for the fellows took place last spring, and a portion of proceeds from artwork sales were donated to Gleaners Food Bank.

An opening reception for Quiet Moonlight will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Friday. Viewing appointments must be scheduled in advance online.  Due to the pandemic, the Detroit art gallery, located at 2845 Gratiot Ave., is limiting its capacity to 10 guests at this time. Masks must be worn inside the space, and social distancing must be followed.
