What is a Rube-Goldberg Machine?
A Rube Goldberg machine is series of reactions and collisions—“machines”—that completes a simple task in a whimsical combination of steps. Check out these examples from OK Go and our partner, Steve Price.
Why make A Rube-Goldberg Machine?
Because we love this city and want to give it another reason to come together. There are cool people doing amazing things all over the city. We just want to want to bring them together to do one more incredible thing. What better way than through building the biggest baddest Rube Goldberg Machine you’ve ever seen.
Partipicants will:
1) Gather Inventors of all ages and backgrounds: Detroit is a city of builders, inventors, tinkerers, and artists fragmented across diverse communities. We bring them together.
2) Inspire people to build: With the support of artists and engineers, participants can use this a chance to experiment, use everyday objects in interesting ways, and create something bigger than the sum of its parts.
3) Provide a toolkit for creativity: With your support, we’ll provide each team with the same baseline of materials, training, and support. We aim to make the entire process as encouraging as possible, where all participants will learn to build challenging machines.
How does this work?
1) Participants sign up in teams of 2-8 people.
2) You will recieve:
A basic starter kit of building materials
4-6 workshops to learn the ins and outs of Rube-Goldberg Machines with guidance from experts like Steve Price of America’s Got Talent
Access to volunteer engineering advisors
Logistical support for participating teams and volunteers
3) At the end of the summer, we will connect each team’s sections. The final step of each section will set off the first step in another team’s section, resulting in a giant machine—The Motor City Machine.
4) We will unveil the Motor City Machine at a public launch event to celebrate the summer’s work and all things Detroit.
