Eastern Market-based fine art publisher 1xRUN along with the Eastern Market Corporation have announced the artist line-up after they unveiled the newest mural in the Market, a collaboration by artists Ellen Rutt and Jesse Kassel entitled “Nourish,” which celebrates the 125th year of this historic Detroit produce district. More than 50 local and international artists will paint large scale murals throughout the area for the second annual Murals In The Market Festival happening on September 15th-24th, 2016. PLAYGROUND DETROIT is pleased to see previous featured artists Dessislava Terzieva and Patrick Ethen on the line-up this year in addition to Ellen Rutt, Paula Schubatis, Ffty and Vaughn Taormina.
This year The Knight Foundation has come on board to support the growing festival. As Detroit Program Director Katy Locker explains, “The festival is a great way to showcase Detroit’s creative spirit…to connect [people] with their city and each other.” Paint for the artists will also be provided by Behr and Montana Cans to help the cohort create murals that will stand through the harsh Michigan weather.
The festival will not only feature day-long live-painting events, but it will also include public programming that includes discussion panels, a Slow Roll cultural tour, art exhibitions and a community-focused Eastern Market block party with both legacy and new businesses. The highly anticipated annual Eastern Market After Dark night-time event that kicks off the Detroit Design Festival will be also coincide during the festival on September 22nd.
Murals can be supported individually or by local businesses through the “Adopt A Mural” program. Supporters will be commemorated on site with a special plaque to let everyone know that they support the arts in Detroit. There are multiple sponsor level options available to support these public artworks. To become a Mural Sponsor, visit here for more information.
Over the past five years 1xRUN and the company’s fine art gallery Inner State, have curated and produced over 30 murals in Eastern Market alone, with more than 100 murals throughout the City of Detroit. With the creation of these murals, each area has seen a significant visual impact on the surrounding neighborhood as well as increased traffic, additional economic development and increased safety.
Eastern Market Corporation (EMC) is the nonprofit that manages Eastern Market on behalf of the City of Detroit. Their “vision is to create the most inclusive, resilient, and robust regional food hub in the United States to ensure that Eastern Market nourishes a stronger and healthier Detroit — from food to art and commerce to culture.”
