MURALS IN THE MARKET FESTIVAL 2017 RETURNS WITH WEEK-LONG SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
MURALS IN THE MARKET FESTIVAL 2017 RETURNS WITH WEEK-LONG SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Building upon the success of the festival’s first two years, Murals In The Market will continue to expand Eastern Market’s walkable footprint, giving visitors locally and internationally a look into businesses and areas often unseen and underutilized, with more than 100 public murals strategically placed throughout the Market District. Public art has long been an integral part of the Eastern Market District experience. The 2017 Murals In The Market festival will expand on 40+ years of large-scale public murals by bringing a new batch of world-class local and international artists to add exciting new works throughout the market. Artists from as far away as New Zealand, Germany and Hawaii will join a diverse group of Detroit-based artists that have made an impact on the public art scene.
In addition to creating new murals, the market will also host a series of events including discussion panels with culturally significant photographers & artists, a cultural tour, art exhibitions, an Eastern Market block party, as well as nighttime activities coinciding with Detroit Design Festival’s Annual Eastern Market After Dark on September 28th.

- 1xRUN Warehouse (map)
Join us for an illuminating and informative afternoon with local photog and art director Jeremy Deptutat who will move from behind the lens to discuss his work, experiences, and techiniques as an internationally recognized artist.
Since he was a kid in the 80’s collecting records (Run-DMC’s “Raising Hell” kicked off his collection) and magazines like Thrasher, Hit Parader & Metal Edge, Jeremy “JD” Deputat has been influenced by music, culture and art. Combining his desire to create and his fascination with capturing life on film led the Detroit-bred artist to quit his day job as an art director and to focus on doing what he loves the most – photographing people and culture. Although he travels frequently, JD continues to sculpt his raw style and gain inspiration from the gritty Motor City he calls home.
His work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Vibe, ESPN The Magazine and he has photographed everyone from local favorites such as Eminem, Kid Rock, Danny Brown and Big Sean to internationally recognized Rhianna, Travis Barker (Blink-182) and 50 Cent.

Shag Threads
- 1xRUN Warehouse (map)
Murals in the Market is excited to colloborate with local photographer and stylist, Jade Lauren and dance duo and creatives, Haute To Death for a night of unforgetable art and sound – Shag Threads.
Jade Lauren is a Detroit based artist that has had pieces most recently featured at TYP Collection and Inner State Gallery, but her work has taken her as far as Myanmar and Bali. For this year’s 3rd annual Murals in the Market she finds herself colloborating with a roster of heavy hitting local artists like Ouizi, Meggs, Amy Smalls to create one of a kind, wearable art. Event attendees will have the chance to purchase the hand painted pieces at the exhibition opening.
Providing the soundtrack for the evening is Haute to Death the Detroit-based dance party and nightlife brand created by Jon Dones and Ash Nowak. They have been self described as “the champagne bottle *pop* in the back seat, the satisfying *snap* of breaking a hood ornament off an expensive car, Haute to Death is an anthem of the new, American classic”. The innovatie duo not only finds themselves tagging in as the evening’s sound selectors, but also lends their eye for impeccable detail to the design as seen in the creation of the Murals in the Market HQ environment for the entirety of this year’s festival. Come enjoy a cocktail in the Haute To Death lounge, soak up some good vibes, and take home a piece of locally painted threads.
