Duane is the Brand New Dog released his debut LP today entitled CD-R LP and will be celebrating with his upcoming show on November 20th opening for reggae artist Sinkane. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Michael Duane Gholston, 23 is an idealist and performance artist first, musician and singer/songwriter second. His music is influenced by 80’s and 90’s electronica with a low-fi, DIY punk aesthetic. His live shows are art performances in themselves, part pop act part avant-garde theater.
Initially he poured his creative energy in the visual arts, attending Detroit High School of Fine and Performing Arts, class of 2009. Bored by lessons on the Italian Renaissance and mundane still life exercises, he began to seriously take on the world of music. Duane has been performing since 2010, where he first performed the infamous (now closed) gay leather bar R& R Saloon. In attendance was “Mad” Mike Banks (techno producer and co-founder of Underground Resistance), and he introduced him to manager Cornelius Harris of Alter Ego Management. His early work as the Teenage Weirdo was electronic yet primitive: it sounds as if it were “recorded in 1982 in the back of a hat shop in Sheffield (UK)” according to Vice magazine.
The Teenage Weirdo performed his final show opening up for Jack White at the Masonic Temple in May 2012; the rest of that year and 2013 were spent recording at his parents’ home in Detroit and in studios in NYC, where he signed a recording contract with the UK label XL Recordings. In 2014, Duane returned to the Detroit music scene under the “Brand New Dog” moniker. He performed in Warsaw at the Festival of the Artist in June 2015, for his first live show outside of his hometown of Detroit. His debut full length is titled “CD-R LP” and is expected to be released in November. Check his social media accounts regularly for list of upcoming live show dates and announcements.
