The #NYC2DET CREATIVE CARAVAN returns again! PLAYGROUND DETROIT  is offering a round-trip to Detroit from New York City with accommodation included to attend the Detroit Design Festival! This long weekend will be full of local cultural immersion, networking opportunities, and unique learning experiences.

Not only will we be your personal tour guide, you will also be invited to the most exciting events happening during the Detroit Design Festival. This year, on Thursday, September 25 during Eastern Market After Dark, PLAYGROUND DETROIT has been invited to present a PechaKucha speech at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Detroit’s Celebration of Architecture ceremony at Shed 3, 2934 Russell Street. This the annual architecture awards ceremony which celebrates quality, local design, where we have been asked to speak about ‘community.’ We are so excited to share this special occasion with our special guest attendees. Eastern Market After Dark is a self-guided tour of 40+ studios, shops and design happenings open late to transform your favorite farmers market. 

The Detroit Design Festival is North America’s Festival of Independent Design. This Festival connects creatives with one another, introduce them to new markets and consumers, and expose Detroit’s creative talent and collective design aesthetic to national and global audiences.

Concentrated in Detroit’s Creative Corridor and featuring various neighborhoods throughout Detroit, the Detroit Design Festival is an aggregation of various partner and community planned and supported events, including but not limited to: product launches and shows, lectures, panel discussions, trunk shows, tours, open houses, retail happenings and design battles. #DDF2014 #designliveshere

Dates + Info

September 24-29th  |  $500  |  Round-trip transportation, accommodation, events, and one group meal per day included.

• 7pm Wednesday, Attendees meet at the announced departure location.
• 8pm Wednesday, The caravan will depart. We will drive to and from Detroit/NYC overnight. Bring a pillow!
• We have partnered with Hostel Detroit to provide accommodation for Thursday-Saturday. Lockers with combination locks are available for valuables at no cost (Please bring your own lock.) 
• Meals: one group meal each day is included.
• 9pm Sunday, The caravan will leave from Hostel Detroit, September 28th and will return on Monday, September 29th at 10am with drop off at the pick-up location.
• Bring your business cards, a stack!

FAQ

Can I invite my well-behaved pet?

No, sorry.

Can I bring my own food and/or alcohol?

Yes. However, drinking in the van in strictly prohibited.

How long is the ride?

It’s a 10-hour drive from NYC to Detroit, pit stops included.

Is Greater Detroit safe?

Yes, it’s safe if you’re smart – like all major cities. The crime in downtown Detroit has decreased 33% since 2001. Be aware of your surroundings, be careful with your money, and be respectful of strangers. Look people in the eye and say hello!

Is Detroit safe to walk around / bike around?

Yes. When biking, bike on the street, use hand signals, wear a helmet. We’ll even rent you a bike for $20 a day. When walking, stick to populated, well lighted areas at night. Trust your instincts.

What’s the security system for Hostel Detroit?

The front door is locked at all times. To enter the building, you must have a pin # that you receive after paying for your reserved bed / room. Please call (313) 451-0333 if you have questions.
