PD PREMIERE: LORD SCRUMMAGE RELEASES 3-D MUSIC VIDEO “LAKE CHEESE”

PLAYGROUND DETROIT PREMIERE: Lord Scrummage has released their 3-D music video for “Lake Cheese” off of their upcoming and not-yet-titled album, dropping this summer. When Lord Scrummage released their debut album, From The Future, they were not exaggerating- witness below, one of the first 3-D music videos we’ve ever seen…have you ever seen a 3-D YouTube video? Director Jacob Hurwitz-Goodman and Giant Eel Productions are behind the video; this new 3-D film technology pushes some serious boundaries in the music video industry in addition a hauntingly eerie, yet charming video concept. Chris Handyside, of Metro Times, recently deemed Lord Scrummage,

“…One of the most productive, dynamic and vibrant gangs of sound… this city has birthed in the last few years.”

It isn’t hard to argue his point– try to imagine thin sheets of psychedelic sound punctured by heavy thumping techno and hip-hop influenced beats. Then add chunky acid basslines and the spooky R&B vocalists stoney stream of consciousness– lyrics from some distant corner of space– and you might begin to imagine the sound of Lord Scrummage. PLAYGROUND DETROIT wanted to know more about how the Lords of Scrummage pulled this one off, so we asked the guys themselves about the video.

PD: This video is awesome! How did you come up with the concept and how does the song relate?

LS: We lifted a line from the Moondog song, “Paris” off the album, Sax Pax for a Sax and wanted to pay him tribute. He had to deal with copyright issues in his own time and we wanted to incorporate that into the video. We decided to play the bad guys who ripped him off, just like Alan Freed did back in the day. After bouncing ideas around, the Director pieced it together into a narrative.”
PD: Tell us about the 3-D aspect of the video.
LS: Edmund Zagorin from Giant Eel Productions approached us about shooting the video. 3-D video, photography and installation are their niche. They really spearheaded the whole thing, which was awesome.”
PD: Where did you find the old men in the video? They’re great!
LS: The Moondog character is a guy named Jon Hughes. He is homeless and spends a lot of time reading in a field near Alex Lauer’s house. We talked to him about being in the video, gave him a Moondog biography so he could get an idea of where we were coming from. He was all for it, and he did a really great job. The other old man is named is played by Ivan Simic. He is an old Macedonian dude who hangs out at a lot of coffee shops around Detroit. He is a self-proclaimed physicist, linguist and Scientology theorist. He supposedly has a G3 iMac full of information beamed from outer-space and also claims to be an alien.”
PD: Where in Detroit was it shot?
LS: The first scenes are right on the border of Hamtramck and Detroit, near the Russell Industrial Center. The party scene was shot at our old DIY venue, Scrummage Bagel Vision, some other shots were scattered around downtown Detroit.”
Lord Scrummage is Alex Lauer, Dave Rosman, Conor Edwards, and Bill Power- incubated in suburban basements through the early 2000’s- until 2005, when they settled in Detroit. These guys are basically the fore-fathers behind Scrummage University; one of the biggest DIY venues downtown. They began building a local presence by routinely performing, managing various DIY venues and hosting events throughout the city. Their varied style has allowed them to collaborate and perform with acts across Detroits musical spectrum, including Danny Brown, Wolf Eyes, and Deastro. Over the years these collaborations have added new depth to their already hybrid sound. Since the release of their 2010 L.P. From The Future, they have toured the country numerous times playing with acts such as E.S.G., Dan Deacon, Acid Mothers Temple, and Tobacco. They are currently honing in on their next L.P., scheduled for release later this Summer 2012.
LISTEN TO From The Future, PLAYGROUND DETROIT recommends the first track, “W.W.D.D.”
