PLAYGROUND DETROIT MOVEMENT 2019 GUIDE: AFTER-PARTIES

PLAYGROUND DETROIT MOVEMENT 2019 GUIDE: AFTER-PARTIES

It’s a well known fact that the after-parties for Movement are just as important as the event itself; while the festival gives you the opportunity to see a multitude of artists all in one place, techno and house music were born in the clubs and underground venues that we have all come to know and love. In honor of that tradition, our staff has you covered with our guide to the best after hours spots for Movement 2019 (and no, those end times are not typos).

FRIDAY, MAY 24th

Here’s one way to start off the weekend with… GRACE! Just before the full madness of Movement weekend begins, have a twirl on the dancefloor you know and love the most. This month LadyMonix is bringing back the most magnificent RIMARKABLE (Dirt Tech Reck) to come bless us once more. If you were at last year’s party then you’ll remember how she WENT OFF and made us ask for more. Last but def not least, this party will celebrate the new 12″ on Frizner Electric from LADYMONIX, ‘Track 39’.

Revival is presenting an impressive line-up with Rejevenate 3 across three stages with music from 9pm-6a to start this weekend off with a secret location in Detroit- marking their first party in the city. Originally based out of Lansing now transplanted to Detroit, their roots in the Lansing House Party and Co-operative Scene cut their teeth for this weekend.

In 2018, the first Rejuvenate [in Lansing] launched as an official movement pre-party with headliner, Asher Perkins. Rejuvenate 2 was also in Lansing this year at the beginning of May, it featured Twin Cousin and was also an official pre-party for movement. Some acts we are really excited about this year are Chief Jesta, Britton, and headliner Mary Yuzovskaya. DJ, producer, and audio engineer Britton is a West Coast tour de force known for his dark minimal driving style of techno

With his love for a wide range of music genres including everything from hip-hop, house, techno, drum and bass, experimental, and an array of live musical elements, Chief Jesta has produced and shared a sound that dances in the duality of the light and dark. Shepherding dance floor vibes, he expresses a tone that tickles the loving groove of the soul, while firing off all the aggression to raise a ruckus in the cacophony of our times, making a name for himself on the west coast scene both through his warehouse events, and his appearances at the full moon gatherings.

Having graced the decks of all Moscow’s hotspots back in the mid-2000s, Mary moved to Berlin, where she quickly became recognised for both her blisteringly-precise vinyl-only techno sets and her painstakingly professional approach to the craft of DJing. Based in New York City since 2013, Mary currently holds a residency at Unter, a notoriously secretive underground techno party showcasing the best in local and international talent. In 2017, she launched her record label called Monday Off, where she curates and presses work from artists that explore techno’s trippier, more hypnotic side.

The party will also feature visual artists performing on two of our stages for the night. We have visuals from VJ Radiance, Baine Bishop, and Vivid. VJ radiance will be performing at movement this year, and curated visuals for last years festival as well. Location will be released on the Facebook event page at 2 pm.

Country Club Disco Warehouse – AC Slater, Chris Lorenzo & more @ the Russell Industrial Center (10pm-?)

Few venues embody the complicated history of Detroit more than the Russell Industrial Center. Beginning as a part of the city’s industrial peak, it became a haven for creatives in search of affordable studio space before reverting back to a future that is largely uncertain. We recommend that you enjoy it while you can, as Detroit’s own Country Club Disco brings it all back home for their epic annual warehouse party during Movement weekend with music from AC Slater, Chris Lorenzo, MASTERIA, PVRTY HVRD, and many more.

No Way Back 2019 @ Tangent Gallery (11pm-12pm)

One of the most storied parties of Memorial Day weekend is back for Movement 2019. Their description says it best:

“No Way Back continues to grow organically, surprising us each year as it pushes beyond anyone’s expectations into pure experience. This year we have a radically improved infrastructure, including a more fluid flow for entry and exit, and many other internal improvements, including a Zendo tent…There are many places to lose yourself, but what happens in at No Way Back might just change your life.”

“We are trying to create a ritual space for personal exploration, to release basic tension. The form that society is forcing you to hold, you can release that. It lets you experience that yourself, as yourself, raw, and to connect to the music and reconnect to life.” – BMG
