Detroit is the perfect city to celebrate Halloween- and with all the clowns that have dominated the headlines, both political and literal- it looks like this year is going to be another weird one! Check out our top pick events and parties that will keep the candy flowing and your bones chilled through Monday evening.
FRIDAY OCTOBER 28TH
Get ready to get spooked, haunted mansion style. Detroit curator duo Rachel Roze Cuccia and Vaughn Taormina present a creepy and creative Halloween exhibition filled with brilliant artists featuring Art Installations by various artists inside of an abandoned Detroit house. This exhibition will showcase the current state of the property while opening it to interpreting the past, present and future. Explore the cryptic West side mansion as artists Brad and Johna Taormina, Maddie and Genevive Kizak, Thomas Ingram III, and more stimulate and scare with inspiring installations including a haunted tunnel in the attic to keep you in the Halloween mood. ‘Spirits’ will flow throughout the evening, with a cash bar and sounds by DJ 100% Halal Meat and friends. Event goes 6-11PM and is free of charge so throw on your best costume and see what Lawson House has in store.
Science Fiction/Double Feature Rocky + Costume Karaoke Party at Our/Detroit Vodka!
It isn’t Halloween without The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Detroit isn’t Detroit without singing and karaoke. Our/Detroit Vodka Distillery is bringing you a creeped out combo of the two with their upcoming Halloween weekend event and you don’t want to miss it. What goes better together than singing, yelling, and dressing up in costumes? Catch an in-house screening of Richard O’Brien’s 1975 classic at 6:00PM, and finish the night off with Costume Karaoke, starting at 8. As if Our/Detroit doesn’t have all the bases covered, Halloween style drinks are on special throughout the night so treat yourself to another helping of Detroit’s delicious vodka please!
IT’S ALIVE! Detroit Funk night resurrects at 1600 West Fort Street. This long standing monthly will revive with sounds from Frank Raines, Sicari, Crate Digga, J-Mac and Eastside Jon. Detroit Funk Night has historically rocked the city late into the night and this year will be no different, there’s even a cash prize for best costume! Come invade the dance floor and let the funk move you. The spirit of this party has been alive and well for years, and will emerge from its dormant state in this Halloween edition. This special evening is featuring guest WILL SESSIONS!
Freakish Pleasures events never disappoint and this weekend they’re live from one of Detroit’s creepiest locations. The Detroit based record label is serving up a full spread with performances from Wolfeyes Shigeto, Vikiviktoria, Jarvi, Bad User Experience, Pussyboys, Crim, Siobahn, Charles Trees and the Monday is the New Monday crew. The event starts at 10:00PM and goes late into witching hour so even late night ghouls can get their groove on. The allegedly haunted hotel will be lively with dancing, drinks and Freakish FAM love so enter the dark dance dungeon if you dare! *Cue evil laugh*
Speaking of gravestones– Woodbridge’s Trumbullplex is ready to rock with a night full of fun activities with rock bands playing your favorite hits! Nazamanaz will be performing as Nazareth, Some Kinda Hate will be performing as The Misfits and there will also be sounds provided by Anguish and the Heavy and Beyond DJ’s. The night will entail a mix of rock and house music, but that’s not nearly all. The event is programmed with a dance contest, paranormal activity storytelling contest, and costume contest, bobbing for apples, food for sale and a haunted side lot with unspeakable monsters. Storytelling starts at 8, Dancing (and contest) in the 9 o clock hour and bands 10:30-1:00AM so join your “Horror Host” Stretch Adam for an evening of fun, food, dancing and mystery.
SATURDAY OCTOBER 29TH
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAUTE TO DEATH! Detroit’s favorite dance party may be turning 9, but Temple Bar ain’t keepin it PG for this birthday banger. As Haute to death’s creator’s remark, “Now it’s time to show up, look good, and celebrate nearly a decade of never holding back.” If you’ve been to H2D before, you already know the deal; Admission is 3 bucks before midnight and $5.00 after. Haute to Death the perfect place to stunt so come prepared with a decked out costume and your dancing shoes. For the last nine years, Haute to death has been a monthly staple in local nightlife, providing a judgement free space to be whatever you want to be. Eventgoers are always welcome to dress up, let go and be whatever they imagine at Haute to Death, and Halloween is just another reason to continue to do so. Need some inspiration? When Grenadier Club talks Jack, they don’t mean Skellington. With their Halloween Werk – U – Late event, Detroit techno will be thumping deep into the night with sounds from your favorite DJ’s from Bak Dor, Body Worx and Macho City. With crisp and clear sounds from Audio Rescue Team, Scott Zacharias, Bunny hop, Rex Bravo and Dretraxx will spin at a sweaty night of dancing and debauchery. Cover is 10 dollars at the door and the long night ahead will be well worth it.
The brainchild of notorious party professionals, Halloratchet III is packed with DJs and producers ready to take your Halloween weekend to another level. Brought to you by Parkhouse, Black Sheep Collective, and The Yellow Wall, Halloratchet III could make the dead rise from their graves just to get their twerk on. With DJ Assault, Stacks// Culture (Assemble Sound), DJ Dash (Parkhouse Ent.), DJ Lanka (Parkhouse ent.) and A$AD (Bounded Vision) on the bill, a wide spectrum of goblins and ghouls are sure to be in attendance. From Booty music to Hip Hop beats, this event has been curated by an A Team of Detroit music collaborators. Entry is $10.00 with a costume and $15.00 without so make sure to dress up! Halloratchet III will be held at 4230 Grand River Ave at Underground Studios, a hidden gem you just have to see to believe. The event starts at 11:00PM and going late until 5 so come turn your Halloween into Halloratchet with the squad.
Urinal Cake Records Presents: Saturday The 29th at UFO Factory
Things are bound to get weird at UFO Factory’s Saturday the 29th event presented by Urinal Cake Records. Costumes are mandatory for entry, as Double Winter, The Craig Brown Band, K9 Sniffles and Timmy’s Organism thrash all night. Cover is 10.00 and the show kicks off at 9:00PM. Amaze eventgoers with your costume and enjoy drinks from the bar as guitar riffs shriek through Corktown like a werewolf’s howl at the moon. Come check out your favorite bands, and maybe gain a new one at UFO’s punk rock takeover.

If you aren’t in a grave by now, we are very proud of you. Halloween on a Monday doesn’t have to suck. Haute To Death and friends are setting the soundtrack to your favorite scary movies and spirited thrillers. Dance, watch, yell at the screen- do whatever.
