PLAYGROUND PRESENTS HOLIDAY RECESS FUNDRAISER WSG RED PILL, VALLEY HUSH, RACEHORSES ARE RESOURCES & DTCHPLNES

Celebrate your HOLIDAY RECESS with PLAYGROUND DETROIT for the third year in a row at our fundraiser party for art supplies and music gear for three Detroit Public High Schools. We’ve organized a killer line-up featuring rapper Red Pill, indie crushes Valley Hush, the experimental Racehorses Are Resources [Chris Peters, Nick Speed, Quelle Chris, & Nick Cicchetti] with special DJ sets from DTCHPLNES — in addition to a group art exhibition featuring over 20 emerging Detroit artists. The evening will host a special holiday raffle with tickets at $1, including a ton of awesome gifts (for yourself or last minute holiday shopping…we won’t tell) with ridiculous savings from valued prices. Paramita Sound gift certificates? Check. A staycation at the new Trumbull & Porter Hotel? Check. Gear from Detroit is The New Black, SMPLFD Clothing and The SMILE Brand, and Third Wave Music? Triple check! Facebook event HERE.

The fundraiser exhibition will take place at The Detroit Pickle Factory, built in 1907 on Detroit’s Eastside. Most recently this space has facilitated artist studios after the Detroit Boom City exhibit over the summer. A group of artists were invited by Dashboard Co-Op to create large installations in the large warehouse; Scott Hocking’s installation is still on view, which is comprised of items that were all found in the space previously.

Students from Detroit Community High School from last year’s successful event

Detroit Community High School is a one of the schools that supplies will be going to, which is part of Detroit Community Schools, a publicly run charter school of around 700 students, in the Brightmoor neighborhood on Detroit’s west side. Since 2009, the Brightmoor Makers, a self-sustained after school program sponsored by DCS, has employed students in a number of social entrepreneurial initiatives, in a variety of skilled trades. The business ventures of the makers include hand engraved signs, electric tricycles, t-shirt screen-printing, and soon urban garden, and maker in residence program.

Beginning in February, DCS, in partnership with the Knight Foundation, The University of Michigan Stamps School of Art and Design, and The Stephen M. Ross School of Business, are proud to open the doors to the Brightmoor Maker Space, a home the original Brightmoor Makers, a communal space for the community’s social entrepreneurial initiatives, and a center open to the general public for sharing ideas and creations together.

In addition to Detroit Community High School, art supplies will also be donated to Detroit Experiencia Preparatory. Central High School will receive the music donations for their music recording studio, which lacks the equipment needed to be used more!

SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS DetroitExposure.com, Detroit By Design (DBD), Leadhead Glass, & Motor City Brewing Works
