PLAYGROUND DETROIT is forecasting plenty of ‘Son’ for the LP album release show of Sunny Detroit: The story of + and – this Saturday, June 18th at The Old Miami. Rah the Son is releasing his debut LP and it feels just as good as summer’s cordial rays. Artist Rahbi Hammond explains the title, “’Sunny Detroit’ depicts the kind of city I have personally experienced. The sense of community, the artistic culture, the dedication to hard work and genuine collaboration that makes Detroit what it is.”
“That is the message behind ‘Sunny Detroit,’ along with the skyline ambiance the city gets from the sun-kissed shine at dusk and dawn,” Hammond confirms. Regarding the subtitle, including the mathematical symbols, he continues, “It’s a take on the ying/yang [concept], that every action has a reaction; you have to take the good with the bad. So whenever I’m going through something, I always remind myself that everything is temporary. That nothing is forever. The key to success in life is to be composed & centered in the balance of things. There is the good and the bad, and then there is the in-between.”
This debut album screams originality and versatility, throughout the fourteen tracks, Rah the Son zealously dances amongst genres, letting listeners into the inner workings of his mind, heart and soul. Rahbi’s thoughts, personality and vigor shine through the music’s sound, and engages listeners with relate-able themes, positive messages, love songs and party anthems.Rah the Son plans to transfer his lively presence to the stage at The Old Miami for a guaranteed uplifting live performance. Rahbi declares that getting up in front of the crowd is “his passion! Shows are what I live for. I love live performance- especially loud, energizing music, which is what I’m expecting from myself. I unleash a different part of myself when I’m performing, which sometimes surprises even my closest friends, all in the name of fun. I definitely lose track of time when I’m on, just getting lost in the moment of things… Bringing a lot of other talent out for the show. My community is showing out for me, with support & love for the game, so we’ll see how hype it’ll get. SHOWTIME!”
The Motor City has a relevant influence on Rahbi, and his pride for the city beams through the album’s songs. From coming downtown as a child to becoming a Wayne State Warrior, Detroit has had a profound impression on Rah the Son. Recalling his early beginnings, “Even though it may not be where I am from, it is where I am and will always be.” Hammond continues to pays homage to the city he loves most throughout the album and even features fun collaborations with other upcoming Detroit artists Tim Schumack and Tart.
“Everybody has their own version of life, a unique story and perspective that adheres ones uniqueness with their personality. “
With its positive message and thought provoking motif, this album is refreshing and just in time for Summer. The theme of the album is a testament to life in the city and in general. As the music travels through your ears it is certain to reach an internal soft spot, begging us to consider affirmative feelings of being surrounded by positivity and being on the right track in life.
Awaiting Saturday’s release show, Rah the Son reflects on the support covering him throughout the production of the album. He “dedicates the project to my parents, Family and my Squad. Lastly but certainly not least, The Purple Prince, who taught me how to ‘Go Crazy’. This one is for you!” The project took a lot of collaboration and hard work, but will add a little fun to the mix. Rah the Son has a painting series on exhibit and other tricks hiding up his sleeve for this performance.
