RECORD STORE DAY CELEBRATES MUSIC THE GOOD OL’ FASHIONED WAY

What records did you score today? Today is international Record Store Day! According to Wikipedia, “Record Store Day is an internationally celebrated day observed the third Saturday of April each year. Its purpose, as conceived by independent record store employee Chris Brown, is to celebrate the art of music. The day brings together fans, artists, and the over 700 independently owned record stores in the United States, along with hundreds of independent record stores across the world.”  This is the 5th annual RSD and there were more than 400 record releases today to support the annual holiday.

The Detroit record collecting community is huge- local record shops in addition to thrifting in Salvation Army and Value World proves bountiful for great vintage thanks to Detroits long-standing affair with music sensations. A lot of Detroit DJs and artists keep it old school and spin a lot of vinyl over the increasingly popular choice of iPad and digi-turn tables.

UHF Records is setting up a pop-up shop at the Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. show featuring Phantasmagoria at the Majestic theatre tonight. The boys spent some of the afternoon at the store location in Royal Oak, MI. UHF Records is a local record store opened up by Lost & Found Vintage store owner, Tommy Dorr.

Hello Records is at 1459 Bagley St. on the corner of Bagley and Trumbull:

Established in 2008 and located in the historic Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, Hello Records is one of the city’s best kept secrets. With a constantly shifting stock spanning the 1890’s to the present, the all vinyl record shop sports one of the most knowledgeable staffs in the midwest. Both the rich Metro Detroit music history displayed on its walls and the impressively curated stock of classic LP’s and rare 45’s in all genres makes a stop at Hello a must for record collectors and curiosity seekers alike.

To celebrate the 5th annual Record Store Day and drive awareness of Detroit’s most notable vinyl options, we organized a Detroit Ca$h Mob event to coincide with the launch of the show. Hello Records served as our main venue, with Hamtramck’s Record Graveyard joining in to provide a second stop on our record crawl.” -via SINGLE BARREL DETROITs blog
