‘SOUND BATH’ WASHES OVER THE SCHVITZ FEATURING LIVE DJ SETS

‘SOUND BATH’ WASHES OVER THE SCHVITZ FEATURING LIVE DJ SETS

SOUND BATH is an innovative concert series where you can listen to live music while you steam. Guests get to enjoy some R&R in a sauna and bath at The Schivtz, a recently renovated and restored 100-year old historic bathhouse in the North End neighborhood of Detroit. The series will run through the summer, featuring four nights with diverse and unique lineups, including local Detroit and national DJs performing in The Schvitz lounge.

Just released today, the season pass is also available for $100 (admission to all four events), and includes exclusive Sound Bath series swag with one free pass to The Schvitz on a day of your choice. Purchase season pass HERE

Joey TwoLanes, the event series organizer with El Club (and DJ in his own right), explains why Detroit is the perfect city to create Sound Bath, with a unique party vibe:

“I’ve heard about a couple different bathhouse parties in other cities, but I have never been to one and have always wanted to go. Some of the others I know about involved more upbeat music. Bathhouses are a place for relaxing and regenerating, so I wanted to build off that vibe and keep the music more along the lines of ambient/downtempo/chill out/dub.”

He continues, “There are many good bars/clubs/event spaces in Detroit. But when I put my ear to the ground, a lot of people want to be social but not exactly in a “Bar” with the heavy drinking presence, etc. When we first toured the Schvitz, we were given passes for that evening, and I witnessed this camaraderie in the steam rooms based around this relaxation. That shared energy is what I am focusing on for these events.”

A few more tips for first-timers: When you’re deep in the banya and you find yourself going for cold water a lot, you know its working. Also- don’t forget to bring flip flops!

Food will be served by Detroit-based pop-up chef, Dr. Sushi, who serves Japanese classics with modern twists, inspired by Michigan and its cultural diversity.  Check out the menu for DR. SUSHI’S SOUND BATH CAFE (or try one of everything for $20):

Salad: Sichuan Root Vegetable Salad $4
Sushi: Market fresh selections from Motor City Seafood, rolled up Maki style. $5-$8 / Vegetable Futomaki $5
Beverage: Coconut Kefir – The Wonder Elixer $5

October 26th: ??? [SPECIAL GUEST TBA] / Beta Librae / Galcher Lustwerk / 8ulentina Foozool / P.R. RUIZ + Rawaat

What excites you about performing at unique/interesting spaces across Detroit like The Schvitz?

P.R. Ruiz: To have the opportunity to- in this case- DJ in a space that isn’t centered around drinking is very exciting because you get to select music for a crowd with a different overall energy, people might perceive the music differently and this gives me the “performer” a chance to maybe experiment- a little more kinda like building a sound experience, instead of just going to make people dance.

Tell me what you’d like Detroit’s creative community to know about your music.

Ruiz: I make some machines play together until I feel like there’s something and sometimes I record that something. If you don’t understand it, you’re thinking too much.

March 16th: Peaking Lights / Acid Test / Russell E.L. Butler / Coconut Babylon / Wetdog / Abby + DJ NJ Drone (Debut)

What excites you about hosting Coconut Babylon at unique/interesting spaces across Detroit like The Schvitz?

Daisuke Hughes of Coconut Babylon: Well, we do like to play diverse settings and environments, but we really like the relaxation and irie nature of the music itself. Playing in a setting where people are seeking personal wellness and holistic comfort is completely in line with our desire to provide that for people sonically, so I suppose it’s a good fit.

Tell me what you’d like Detroit’s creative community to know about your music.

Hughes: Our crew of three (Monty Luke, Jeff Risk, and myself) all met each other 10 years ago while living in the same neighborhood (Corktown) in Detroit. In fact, we all met as a result of living in the same building. Since then, many things have changed. Detroit was growing, music and art were expanding and we all felt that a simple reggae/pan-african party with good friends and good vibes was missing. It was very simple to us. Homies who share a love for the music, sharing it with our friends and community, in the chilliest possible way; afternoon parties on the motor city wine patio. In the end, this remains our focus, nothing more than a celebration of collective existence.

LISTEN:
Russell EL Butler – Non-binary experimental artist and DJ based in Oakland, California.
Coconut Babylon – An island-style Detroit party from DJ’s Monty Luke, Jeff Risk, and Daisuke Hughes.
Abby & DJ NJ Drone

May 24th: Asmara / Via App / Working Women / Will DiMaggio / MDO / Lakkis + NIJK

What excites you about performing at unique/interesting spaces across Detroit like The Schvitz?

Nijk: Artist and neighborhood run spaces excite me, as well as architecturally unsanctioned spaces ~ those not typically built for performance: a church, a sauna, a taco bell; this, for me, is a very Detroit, very fleeting phenomenon.

Tell me what you’d like Detroit’s creative community to know about your music.

My records all have dark/moody and/or light/enchanting qualities. I have never made music, but would like to experiment with sound, or collab with musicians as a visual artist.
