SPARK INITIATIVE PAIRS LONG-TIME DETROITERS WITH NEWCOMERS ENCOURAGING FRIENDSHIPS & COMMUNITY
Collision Works has partnered with WDET & the Detroit Public Library to match veteran Detroiters with newcomers to see the city with a new set of eyes while making new friends through the Spark program. This is a really amazing opportunity to make personal connections for Detroiters new and old to share experiences and information with one another. Why didn’t we think of this ourselves?
When a flint hits a stone sparks fly! And when sparks fly, we can sparkle. Together.”
If you have lived in Detroit all your life, or most of your life, and feel a deep sense of city pride, seen a lot and believe with hard work we can get through anything. Or you just moved here in the last few years, for a job, for a project and excited by the possibilities of this re-emerging city. This partnered program allows everyone to learn from one another. Once you get matched you also receive a booklet that contains lists of things in the city you might do together, discount incentives to attend select places and events as a pair, with easy games and activities you can play to get to know each other a little better, and simply commit to three activities over six months.
Every month on the 3rd thursday Collision Works will host a conversation with some of our sparks and an audience of whoever wants to be a part of the discussion. This summer our partner WDET will record some conversations between sparks for on-air broadcast.
This program “recognize[s] there are people who were not born in Detroit but have lived here for many years and consider it home. We also recognize that people who live outside official city limits often consider themselves longtime Detroiters. [It] is designed to be inclusive and no one will be turned away on technicalities. We believe crossing the lines and exploring how we are alike and how we are different is important for everyone.”
