TEDxDETROIT: SPEAKER VERONIKA SCOTT ON THE EMPOWERMENT PLAN

TEDxDetroit Speaker Veronika Scott explains the inspiration behind Element S, a convertible sleeping bag and coat she designed while in college, which are now made by and distributed to the homeless community in Detroit. Her speech exemplifies the innate spirit of the Detroit can-do attitude: the people who call Detroit their home do what they have to in order to overcome various hardships, and creatively and independently problem-solve solutions. As she points out,

Where else in the world, but Detroit?… It’s the Wild West of Creativity. If our job that we want isn’t here, and isn’t being offered, we make it here for ourselves…It is really is, I think just because of Detroit, and the timing…we can really change drastically our environment and the community around ourselves. And here, we’re doing that all the time.

Last year in November, Veronika made a trip out to NYC and gave a few OCCUPY WALL Streeters her design. Read more about her trip on The Empowerment Plan blog.
