THE DO OVER PARTY RETURNS TO DETROIT WSG AT THE BELT ON AUGUST 26TH

The Do-Over music event series has been ‘doing it’ in Los Angeles for over ten years; now presented by adidas, this international multi-city event will return to Detroit on Saturday, August 26th, 2017. The free BBQ day party filled with fun in the sun, good times loaded surprise musical guests was established in 2005 as a Sunday backyard BBQ in Los Angeles and since has gone international.

According to AXS.com, “The Do-Over is the very successful offspring of three well-known figures on the Los Angeles music scene, Jamie Strong, Chris Haycock and Aloe Blacc. Strong was director of sales and marketing at Ubiquity Records when he helped found The Do-Over, moving on to the same position at hip hop label Stones Throw Records for a five year run, before co-founding Innovative Leisure, an LA based indie label, in 2011. Haycock is one of the city’s top DJs, and spins for Do-Over events around the world.”

Frankie Banks, Detroit-based DJ and local event producer for The Do Over, filled us in on what to expect from the Saturday day party and more about the history behind the event’s landing in Detroit.

“Around the time that the Do Over started, I was DJing in LA quite a bit. I ended up DJing the Do Over twice when it was still at Crane’s Tavern in Hollywood, and built a relationship [with co-founders] Chris, Jamie and Aloe. A lot of the music they were playing and guests they were bringing out were from Detroit, so once they started took the party on the road traveling to other cities, I always nagged them about throwing one [in Detroit]. Finally, in 2015 I came on board as event producer and ended up doing The Do Over at TV Bar as part of their 10 Year Anniversary. It was a pretty epic event- the line-up featured Questlove, Waajeed, Dez Andrés, King Britt and myself as the mystery guests.

The Do Over, TV Lounge, Detroit, Michigan, 2015 (ft Questlove, Nick Speed, Frankie Banks).

Can you share any line-up details or clues? Or is everything a secret?

Everything is Top Secret. The mystery element is really part of what makes the Do Over special… you know there’s gonna be good music, so that’s what people come for- not the names on the bill. You never know who is going to show up- but it will be every bit as solid as the 2015 lineup.

I can tell you that we are definitely bringing out some really heavy hitters for Saturday though.

What makes The Do Over so special?

The Do Over started as a small backyard BBQ Sunday-type deal; sunshine, sangria, and amazing music. [It] really felt more like you were at a really good house or block party than at the club; every single person in a packed backyard dancing for 8-10 hours straight. I think that the Do Over has really been able to carry the vibe created at those original parties to the events that they now do around the world.

The mystery element is another factor that contributes to the uniqueness of the party. You show up for a good time and might catch a set from DJs like Questlove, Theo Parrish, DJ Jazzy Jeff, or Flying Lotus. You never know who is gonna show up, but you always know its gonna be good. Really good.

I would honestly say it’s the best party on the planet. I’m extremely excited to be involved with bringing this event back to Detroit.
