WAKING WINDOWS FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE GUIDE: DAY TWO
Day Two of Waking Windows Festival line-up is appropriately named, “Hip- Hop, R&B/ Funk Dance Party,” taking a rhythmic turn with an impressive roster of contemporary Detroiters and visiting veterans.
PLAYGROUND DETROIT’s Hailey Dukes gets down to it to help guide all your two-steps and best dance moves to some of the top performances of Saturday night.
Dam – Funk
This West Coast musician, vocalist and producer has brought the funk to dancefloors all over the world since his first appearance on Stone’s Throw Records in the early 2000s. From clubs to remixes to gigantic festivals, this consistently touring jet setter ignites the globe’s dancefloors with his rare music selection, writing and producing skills and original music. A music historian and enthusiast, a night with Dam Funk is like an excavation into music’s priceless relics of style and sound. At his 2017 Waking Windows performance, Dam Funk will be performing with a full live band, breathing a new life to Dam’s familiar and funky music.
Moodymann
This Detroit producer, musician, and label head has been in the game for over two decades with no signs of slowing down. Born in the city of techno and soul, Moodymann fuses these genres with countless others for a catalogue representative of an eclectic, talented and renowned artist. An avid devotee to Detroit’s classic sounds, Moodymann pays homage to original Detroit music and culture while continuing to develop and work with contemporary acts, even appearing on Drake’s latest More Life album (2017). If there’s one thing Moodymann knows it’s how to make people dance and he’s sure to do just that at his Waking Windows performance.
Jay Daniel
With music in his veins, Jay Daniel is a well-known name in Detroit music. A young musician, producer, DJ and Watusi High label head, Daniel has earned his stripes in the local music scene releasing music on Theo Parish’s label Sound Signature, Kyle Hall’s label Wild Oats Music and most recently debuting his well-received “Broken Knowz” album on Ninja Tune (London, UK). Mixing identifiable sounds of Detroit, Chicago, and the world abroad, Jay Daniel brings a unique and fresh perspective to dance music while simultaneously honoring contributions of the greats. Bevlove
Bevlove is Detroit’s soul-siren. An entrancing, -technical- and truly talented singer and songwriter, Bevlove hits notes like an angel while singing about her debaucherous ways. From ballads to club bangers- she does it all. Her latest EP, Talk That Shit was very well received, keeping the songstress busy with performances, video shoots and- basically being an everyday boss. You can always count on Bevlove’s performances to be a surreal experience [put those phones away], to soak it all up, you better “Do What [She] Says.” Watch one of Detroit’s brightest stars shine with all the glitter and pizzazz holding weight with the visiting talent.
Video7
Video7 is a Detroit-based audio/visual collective with talented musicians, engineers, songwriters, singers, designers, artists and more. This eclectic group captures audiences with their expressive sound, versatile talents, effortless group cohesion, cultural diversity and funky fashionable style. Video7 can cover any genre you throw at them, with their expert singers and musicians stealing the show. Gathering steam in both Detroit and nationwide, Video7 is definitely up next.
Disco Phantom
Brian Nagle aka Disco Phantom is no stranger to the Waking Windows festival as a core member of the event’s production crew. Hailing from Burlington, VT the visitng DJ has a huge fan base in Vermont frequenting the indie rock scene in the city. Disco Phantom is constantly performing, remixing and blending genres for a set that will keep you wondering where he’s headed next. From Talking heads to Outkast and Kurtis Blow, Disco Phantom keeps an uptempo performance packed with your favorite dance hits.
